There's already a new phrase sweeping the country in the shadow of this morning's announcement that Hostess is shutting its American operations: Twinkiegeddon.
Hostess has been struggling with a strike by its labor union, the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union, which has been going on since a September contract slashed workers' wages and benefits.
But a little labor dispute isn't stopping Americans from sweeping store shelves clean of their favorite specimen of modern food technology.
"We're definitely seeing a sharp increase in purchases of Hostess products today," Mike Siemienas, Supervalu spokesman told CNN Money. "We expect this will continue as more consumers become aware of the news."
CNN also reports that Twinkies have been skyrocketing on the popularity charts at Amazon. In the last 24 hours, Twinkies sales jumped more than 31,000 percent on Amazon's "Movers & Shakers" sales ranking.
