A Montana company said Nov. 10 that it would defy a state order to kill a bear suspected of being involved in the mauling death of a trainer.

Following the report that a trainer was killed while cleaning the animals' pen at Animals of Montana, the Associated Press reports today that the company is challenging any attempt to kill the second of two bears, after the first bear was immediately shot following the Nov. 4 incident.

Animals of Montana leases bears, leopards and tigers for movies and professional photography.

Company officials said they believe the second bear didn't take part in the mauling, but added that "there was no way to know for sure."

Montana wildlife officials said Friday that the second bear should be killed "to protect the safety of the public and employees of Animals of Montana."

"I myself, personally, fully intend to protect this bear with everything I have," head trainer Demetri Price told the AP. "They are going to have to arrest me and take me away in chains before they can take the bear."
