This morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that Southwest Airlines is planning to ground its direct flights between Boise and Portland, Ore., in spring 2013.
"The current fuel environment doesn't allow us to continue operating that market with nonstop service," Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins told the IPT in an email.
Hawkins said Southwest had been studying passenger data for years before "pulling the plug on these flights."
"What we're seeing across the U.S. is a shift from so-called short haul demand to more longer-haul itineraries," Hawkins told the IPT.
After the halt of the direct flights between Boise and Portland, passengers will have to connect through Oakland, Calif., or Las Vegas.
