More than $625,000 in federal funds have been earmarked to retrofit idaho school bus engines and construction equipment in order to reduce toxic pollutants from diesel emissions. The funds will be pumped through two grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

As many as 40 school buses and construction vehicles will be retrofitted with new technology to reduce the emissions.

According to the EPA, older diesel engines emit large amounts of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which are linked to asthma, lung and heart disease.
