Like Water for Chocolate, the international bestseller that examines feminism, self-growth and Mexican traditions, is being banned from sophomore English classes at Nampa High School.

This morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that the chairman of the Nampa School Board received 15 emails complaining about the book. Chairman Scott Kido told the Press-Tribune that one parent called the novel "a vile piece of work," adding "let's not set kids up for failure because they have moral standards." Kido agreed with the comments and said the book was being pulled from classes.

Like Water for Chocolate blends the supernatural with reality and features a recipe in each of the book's 12 chapters. The story follow Tita who, as the family's youngest daughter, is beholden to take care of her ailing mother rather than pursue the man of her dreams. Tita instead channels her passion into her cooking.
