Cycling Census Update Set for Mid-September

Three sure signs of the unofficial beginning of fall: going back to school, football season and the twice-yearly bike count.

The Ada Bike Alliance, a coalition of cycling advocates, heads up the biannual census, providing data to the Ada County Highway District. ACHD planners use the data to design and implement bike improvements.

For example, ACHD implemented a pilot program earlier this year, installing green-colored bike lanes and shared-lane markings. Cycle census takers, who will be out in force Tuesday, Sept. 11, through Thursday, Sept. 13, will be looking to gauge usage of the new lanes.

Special focus will also be placed on the Broadway Avenue bridge and access points near the western terminus of the Greenbelt in Garden City.

The alliance is looking for at least 75 volunteers to help count cyclists during a two-hour period during the morning and/or evening commutes. Those wishing to help can get more information at the Ada Bike Alliance website.
