Buhl Couple Charged in Cancer Fundraising Fraud

The Twin Falls Times-News reports that a Buhl couple were locked up Aug. 25, charged in a cancer fundraising scheme.

Michael and Lisa Holley were busted at a planned car wash and raffle fundraiser and charged with grand theft by deception. Law enforcement said the Holleys told donors that they were raising money for a daughter who had leukemia, when in fact, they were raising money to pay a lawyer to help them regain custody of their daughter.

Police told the Times-News that they were alerted by a neighbor who read about the fundraiser.

At the time of the arrest, police also confiscated gift certificates and gift cards that had been donated to the family from several retailers.

In the meantime, the couple have to do some more fundraising. Michael Holley's bail was set at $50,000 while his wife's bail was set at $5,000.
