AP Report: Bar Smoking Ban Gets Mixed Reviews

An AP report published today says the ban in bars is getting mixed reviews, with "some bar owners saying the prohibition has hurt business while employees and patrons give the ban high marks."

Boise's most-recent smoking ordinances went into effect on Jan. 2, banning smoking in bars and clubs, as well as other public areas like the Grove plaza and all parks.

Lynn Howell, owner of 10th Street Station, told BW at the time that he'd probably lose about 25 percent of his business because of the ban. And in March, Ryan Murphy, bartender at 10th Street Station, told BW that the bar had seen a significant drop in overall sales. In that same report, BW spoke to smokers who continued to light up in nonsmoking public areas in spite of the ban, as well as smokers who'd relocated their happy hours to Garden City, where smoking is still permitted in bars.
