ORIGINAL POST 9 a.m.

A U.S. Forest Service firefighter was killed Sunday while battling the Steep Corner fire in north-central Idaho.

A supervisor with the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest told the Associated Press that the female firefighter was killed when one tree fell and crashed into another tree, causing it to fall in a domino effect. A formal investigation will be launched into the incident, which occurred near Orofino.

"The Forest Service is devastated by the loss of one of our own," Rick Brazell, supervisor of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest, told the Lewiston Tribune. "We ask the public to join us in keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers."

The firefighter's name has not yet been released.
