An increased number of residents of Canyon County are representing themselves in civil cases like lawsuits and divorces, where the cost of hiring a lawyer is often too expensive.
So the County has set aside money from the Idaho Supreme Court to hire an attorney to help in those proceedings. A preliminary budget set aside $60,000 for the program.
In criminal cases, the U.S. courts system provides attorneys to those who can't afford legal counsel. Canyon County commissioners identified a need for legal help for residents in civil cases following an uptick in personal representation.
