More than a few folks at the Boise Airport this morning were daydreaming of a tropical breeze as Allegiant Airline announced that it will begin winging Idahoans to Honolulu beginning Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013.

"We'll fly out of Boise once a week, each Sunday morning and offer return flights every Saturday evening," said Brian Davis, Allegiant's director of communications. "Additionally, we'll have twice-a-week flights to Las Vegas, beginning Friday, Oct. 26."

The airline also unveiled discount fares (that must be purchased by Tuesday, Aug. 14), charging $62 one-way to Vegas (for travel by Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013) and $180 one-way to Hawaii (for travel by Tuesday, April 16, 2013).

"But you'll see that those discounts are in line with our usual fares," Davis added.

Boise Mayor Dave Bieter joked that he thought it was tradition for the mayor and his family to be on the inaugural flight to Hawaii. Bieter later told Citydesk that he's never traveled to the 50th state.

Bieter said that he was aware of "ongoing conversations" with other airlines to bring more service and destinations to the Boise Airport. In May, Boise Weekly spoke with then-new airport director Rebecca Hupp who said her team was planning a series of in-person conversations with some of the nation's top air carriers.

"We have to compete for air service as a community," said Hupp. "And we need to have a very detailed presentation. For example, we're only going to ask them for something that fits into their business model. We're not going to get Delta to fly from Boise to Philadelphia, which is not one of their hub cities. You really need to know the airlines' structure and what makes sense for them. You need to ask for something that fits."
