Southwest Customers Overcharged—Some 20 Times—For One Flight

Southwest Airlines has begun making amends to scores of customers whose credit and debit cards were repeatedly charged—in some cases 20 or more times—for a single flight.

Hundreds of would-be fliers began tweeting and posting stories on Facebook about how Southwest, promising 50 percent discounts to celebrate a company anniversary, instead overcharged for the flights. Many customers also complained that they ran into personal financial hassles because of the screw-up, including drained checking accounts, bounced checks and even canceled bank cards.

Southwest says it has begun filing refunds to the customers but cautioned that "timing will vary depending on the individual bank."
