A few days after the Olympic torch is extinguished at the London summer games, another big piece of Olympic news is expected that could have a significant Idaho impact. The U.S. Olympic Committee could make an announcement as soon as Thursday, Aug. 16, that would designate Sun Valley as an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Nordic training site, the first such site in the United States.
This morning's Idaho Mountain Express reports that the USOC is completing contracts with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation regarding the designation.
"Some of it is just kind of hung up because of the little thing going on in London," Joy Kasputys of Sustain Blaine told the Mountain Express. "It's just a matter of getting people together, and the USOC was busy with the Olympics."
The official designation is expected to occur at a special celebration slated for Ketchum Town Square on Aug. 16.
The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation has set a goal of sending six of its athletes to the 2013 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
