Two environmental groups contend that a proposed logging project 14 miles northeast of Riggins would harm protected species, including Canadian lynx, bull trout, steelhead and chinnok.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that Friends of the Clearwater and the Alliance of the Wild Rockies have filed notice that they intend to sue the U.S. Forest Service to stop the planned logging project, which would take place in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.

The Forest Service says its intention is to treat lodgepole pines damaged by beetle infestations in the region and its project would include logging, restoration and removal of some all-terrain vehicle trails.

But the environmentalists claims that the project would severely harm species protected by the Endangered Species Act.
