Homeland Security officials reported the discovery of two handguns on June 6 at the security checkpoint of the Boise Airport, the fourth and fifth weapons found during routine screening in Boise this year.
Transportation Security officers discovered the weapons in a carry-on bag of a Phoenix-bound male passenger. The guns were taken into custody and the passenger was cleared to fly. The weapons were described as a Browning Belgium 32 caliber pistol and a Makarov 9 mm pistol.
Civil penalties for the discovery of unauthorized carry-on weapons run as high as $11,000 per incident. According to the TSA, security officers discovered more than 1,300 firearms in carry-on bags nationwide in 2011.
