Otter Signs Texting While Driving Ban, To Take Effect July 1

It's official - come Sunday, July 1, it will be illegal to text while driving in Idaho. Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter signed the bill into law Thursday.

When effective, drivers face an $85 fine for using a hand-held device to review, prepare or send written communications while driving. (Hands-free devices are exempt.) Currently, Idaho invokes misdemeanor penalties for inattentive driving but had no specific law banning texting while driving.

Idaho will join 35 other states that ban text messaging for drivers.
