Mitt Romney pulled off a convincing win Tuesday night in the Illinois primary. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Romney led with 47 percent compared to Rick Santorum's 35 percent, Ron Paul's 9 percent and Newt Gingrich's 8 percent.
With the exception of the Deep South, Romney has now won GOP caucuses or primaries in every other region of the country. His wins include Florida, Ohio and Virginia, key battleground states in this fall's general election.
But last night's results didn't seal the deal for Romney - it certainly boosted his lead in the delegate chase, but he will need strong performances in contests over the next few months to claim the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.
The next state to vote, Louisiana on Saturday, is leaning heavily toward Santorum.
