Declo Republican Sen. Denton Darrington announced Friday that he's stepping away from the Idaho Legislature after the 2012 session.

Darrington, the longest serving current member of the Idaho Senate, said he had considered running for re-election, but since redistricting placed him the same district as his friend and colleague Rupert GOP Sen. Dean Cameron, he decided to retire.

On Feb. 27, Oakley rancher Douglas Picket said he would run against Cameron in the newly reapportioned District 27, covering Cassia and Minidoka counties.
