There will be quite a few hands in the air tonight as Boise Mayor Dave Bieter and four members of the Boise City Council are all sworn in during a special session, to be held at the Boise Depot.
Bieter will be sworn in to a third term by his brother Magistrate Judge Christopher Bieter. Also being sworn in this evening will be Council Members Elaine Clegg and David Eberle, who also were elected to third terms last November. Council Member Lauren McLean will be sworn in to a full term, after being appointed to the council a year ago and winning election in November. The council's newest member, Ben Quintana, who won convincingly in November, will also be sworn in this evening.
The council will also bid farewell to outgoing Council Member Alan Shealy, who has served since March 2003.
It won't be just pomp on this evening's agenda. The council will also consider the first reading of a proposed series of amendments to the city's taxi ordinance. Proposed changes include a requirement for drivers to accept debit and/or credit cards, improvement of vehicle quality, limiting personal use of taxis, and a new rule that drivers be able to understand English.
You can read more about the proposals in the Jan. 4 issue of BW.
