Seventeen employees of the Idaho National Laboratory were rushed to an INL medical facility after being exposed to low-level radiation from plutonium Tuesday. The INL said there was no risk to the public.
The accident occurred inside a facility used for handling, processing and examining spent nuclear fuel, radioactive waste and other irradiated materials. The Material and Fuels Complex, where the exposure occurred, is located near the edge of the INL's 890-square-mile site in eastern Idaho.
There were no immediate details from the lab on the precise cause of the radiation release. Reuters reported late Tuesday that the incident "appeared to be the most serious accident at the lab since 2007."
