Sometime between now and Monday, the people who count other people for a living estimate that the globe's 7 billionth person will be born. The number is a sobering reminder that the world still increases by 10,000 newborns an hour.
Is there room on the planet to support 7 billion-plus people? Actually, yes. Seven billion people could fit into the state of Texas, creating a population density of New York City. And literally, there is enough food, water and other essentials to keep everyone healthy.
But reality tells us that one in seven people—yes, that's a billion people—go hungry around the world today, in spite of the fact that as much as half the food produced worldwide ends up wasted, either rotting in fields, markets or in refrigerators.
The BBC has an intriguing search engine with which you can see where you fit into the 7 billion. By filling in your birth date, country and gender, you can approximate your number.
