Whole Foods to Break Ground Friday

In 2006, Whole Foods expressed interest in building a Boise location, with hopes of opening a store no later than 2008. But the recession pushed the idea to the back of the checkout line.

In 2010, the specialty grocery chain revisited a plan to build a store on Broadway Avenue between Front and Myrtle streets but found some initial resistance from Boise's Planning and Zoning Commission.

But some revisions and a good amount of compromise finally pushed the Whole Foods project through the city's design review process earlier this year. And now, Whole Foods is scheduled to break ground this Friday for a 35,000-square-foot store, its first in Idaho.

"We started the process before the bubble burst," said Brad Schlosser, the Texas-based developer of the project. "But we were confident that Boise had the demographic profile to make this a success even in a downturn."

Whole Foods will be joined by a 15,000-square-foot Walgreens at the Broadway Avenue site.
