This week marks a significant change to everything from traffic patterns to sports schedules to a bump in retail sales as approximately 77 million American children and adults head back to school, nearly 27 percent of the U.S. population.
In the Treasure Valley, Nampa students head back to class on Monday, Aug. 22. Boise, Caldwell, Middleton and Vallivue district students return to school Wednesday, Aug. 24. Kuna students are back in class on Thursday, Aug. 25, and Meridian schools resume on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
- Approximately 19.7 million young adults are enrolled in the nation's colleges and universities this fall, a 33-percent jump from 20 years ago.
- The National Retail Federation estimates that families with children in grades K-12 will spend an average of $603.63 on apparel, school supplies and electronics.
- More than 40 percent of families polled by NRF said they will be spending less than previous years and will be buying more generic products.
- Nearly 30 percent of those polled said they will make do with last year's school items.
