The Darkest Planet

Astronomers unveiled research on a new world today, reportedly darker than coal.

The planet, orbiting a distant star, is formally labeled TrES-2b and is the size of Jupiter. It is located about 750 light years away in the direction of the constellation of Draco the Dragon.

The study is published in the Royal Astronomical Society Journal Monthly Notices. Scientists used NASA's orbiting Kepler spacecraft to make the observations.

"TrES-2b is considerably less reflective than black acrylic paint, so it's truly an alien world," said David Kipping of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
