Citigroup has acknowled that hackers gained access to account information of hundreds of thousands of its credit card customers. Citiigroup said the breach could have affected approximately 1 percent of its North American bank card customers, representing 200,000 accounts.
In the last month, hackers tapped into accounts in the Sony PlayStation platform and Google Gmail accounts, including some belonging to senior U.S. government officials.
Citigroup said the breach affected holders of credit cards but not debit cards. Customers were expected to be notifed by mail and most will receive replacement cards. A company statement said hackers were able to view general account information, including customers' names, account numbers and contact information such as email addresses.
