A proposal to place advertising on school buses sailed through the State Senate Education Committee this afternoon. This is the same committee that forwarded Tom Luna's controversial proposals to reform Idaho classrooms.
During testimony this afternoon, a representative for the Meridian School District, the state's largest district, said they were anxious to try out advertising on buses in hopes of generating $1.5 million in gross revenue annually. Meridian has 280 buses in its fleet.
"We've been looking for ways to generate revenues," said Eric Exline, spokesman for the district.
The bill, sponsored by Republican Sen. Chuck Winder, heads to full debate on the Senate floor.
