Nearly two weeks after it pulled out of the Port of Lewiston, the first of the controversial mega-loads crossed the Idaho/Montana border a few minutes before midnight last night.
The shipment is one of four giant loads of oil equipment destined for the ConocoPhillips oil refinery in Billings, Mont. The Idaho Transportation Department has yet to set a travel schedule for a second, third or four mega-load. Once a second shipment traverses U.S. Highway 12 across North Central Idaho into Montana, the first pair will continue rolling to Billings.
Not until the two giant loads reach the Conoco facility will the next pair leave Lewiston, one at a time. The full process is expected to extend into April. Waiting in the wings is Exxon/Mobil with its hopes to roll more than 200 mega-loads across U.S. 12 and up to the Alberta Tar Sands Project.
