Argo, the real-life 2012 film about Argo, a phony 1980 Hollywood film that served as cover for a hard-to-fathom-but-true rescue of six Americans from Iran emerged as the Best Picture of the Year Sunday night, taking home the Motion Picture Academy's top prize.

Boise Weekly readers have been hearing about Argo since our September 2012 coverage of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Argo is the first best picture not have its director (Ben Affleck) to be nominated for an Oscar since 1989's Driving Miss Daisey.

Daniel Day-Lewis became the first actor in Motion Picture Academy history to win three Best Actor awards after his name was revealed Sunday night as the winner for his performance in Lincoln.

Jennifer Lawrence won her first Oscar, as Best Actress, for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.

Oscars for supporting performances were handed to Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables and Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained. It was Waltz's second Oscar.

The evening's big suprise came when Ang Lee won the Best Director award for Life of Pi, trumping what many expected to be a win for Stephen Spielberg for directing Lincoln.

Brave, Disney's Pixar feature won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Pixar films have won seven Oscars to date.

Searching for Sugar Man took the documentary feature prize and Amour was the winner of Best Foreign Language Oscar.
