And the Winners Are...
On Feb. 11, the 49th Annual Grammy Awards aired on CBS. If you missed it, here's a recap of a couple of big surprises:
Record of the Year: "Not Ready to Make Nice," Dixie Chicks. Clearly, winners are not chosen by country music fans poll.
Album of the Year: Taking The Long Way, Dixie Chicks. I have to wonder if someone at the Recording Academy isn't a little bit scared of Natalie Maines. She did, after all, take on both President Bush and Toby Keith. The Chicks walked away with five awards in all.
Best New Artist: Carrie Underwood. This one isn't really much of a surprise but one of her musical performances was. The American Idol winner-cum-sweetheart of neo-country will some day, hopefully have enough cred to say, "No," if ever asked to perform an Eagles song again with Rascal Flatts. It was just weird.
Other winners of note were the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who took home four awards, Mary J. Blige took three and Gnarls Barkley and Bob Dylan will have to find a place on their fireplace mantels for two each. The Flaming Lips, Wolfmother, Rick Rubin, Bruce Springsteen and others are now also proud owners of shiny little statuettes. Oh, and hell froze over again: the Police reunited.
