I think the block of Kootenai between Shoshone and Owyhee on the Bench is the nicest stretch of this street because of the size and charm of its houses and because it is completely tree-lined. The home I am reviewing today is English cottage style, and it is quite striking because it looks like two A-frames sitting next to each other. The exterior of the house is cream stucco with dark brown trim and a 5-year-old cedar shingle roof. The driveway is extra wide. There is a three-sided flagstone courtyard leading to the front door. A small entryway leads to the living room, which is absolutely wonderful. There is an open-beamed ceiling, a rock fireplace with mantel, 3/4-inch knotty pine paneling, built-in book shelves, windows on three sides and a Dutch door leading to a side deck. Behind the living room is an eating nook set in a bay window. The kitchen is galley-style and leads to a cozy den, off of which is a utility room and a half-bathroom. A door off the den leads to one of the back yard patios. The kitchen counters are new as is the Berber carpet in the den, and the curtains and shades in the entire house are also new. The entire interior has been professionally repainted and the wood paneling has been re-stained.
There are also a formal dining room, a full bath with tub/shower combination and the master bedroom on the first floor. The master bedroom has windows on three sides. The first floor hallway includes a built-in linen closet and broom closet.
Carpeted stairs lead to the second floor. To the right is a carpeted loft area with a triangular window. The rest of the floor is a bedroom. There are two new skylights. It's all very cozy and would be great for children.
Off of the dining area are stairs to the basement, where there are a bedroom, a bath with a shower and a family room. There's also a furnace room with extra room for storage. The garage is single-car with stairs (not pull down) leading to storage above.
The house is heated by a 5-year-old gas forced-air furnace and also has air conditioning. There is a chandelier in the dining room, some antique light covers and a ceiling fan in the living room. Some of the windows are casement and there are modern screens and storms on all of the windows.
The lot is lovely. There are many mature trees, and there are two patios at the back of the house. Irrigation waters this lot, so the new owners can save lots of money.
Pros: This house has a lot of character and is very cozy and charming. The living room is especially wonderful. The lot is like a park, and it has a courtyard, a deck and two patios!
Cons: The two basement rooms need one egress window each to be legal rooms.
