A Gresham, Ore., man was hauled into a Clackamas County court Monday and charged with the kidnapping, rape and murder of a 21-year-old Starbucks barista.
Whitney Heichel, who was a member of the same Jehovah's Witness Church as her alleged killer, vanished on her way to her morning shift at Starbucks last week. Her body was discovered Oct. 19, and a neighbor, 24-year-old Jonathan Holt, was arrested shortly thereafter.
When Holt appeared in court via closed-circuit television Monday, he was crying and wearing an anti-suicide outfit.
Prosecutors say he admitted to waiting for Heichel outside of her apartment, asking for a ride and then kidnapping her. A massive search ended when her body was found on Larch Mountain, 40 minutes from her home.
